On Coll, there is no piped water outside of the village, with properties rellying on private water suplies like boreholes, dams and springs, traveling to the village tap, or buying in botted water to access drinking water. There are 23,981 Private Water Supplies in Scotland, and it is now a legal obligation for commercial properties to purify their water, and here lies the problem.
Harmful contaminants like E.Coli, Manganese, Iron etc. are often present, and traditional pruifiers like UV and Reverse Osmosis systems are no match, especially when the weather is bad, leaving contaminants in the water suply. Accessing safe water off grid is a big problem in rural communities community.
